Everybody has excuses for themselves. But in the case of starting one’s own business – thoughts and phrases that justify the absence of such a beginning are very rarely fair. Usually, self-justifications are rooted in simple ignorance of some things that can be quite easily learned. Jeff Hayden, executive secretary of Inc.com magazine, offers his variant of exposing popular excuses against starting a business; translates Prostobiz.ua.
Self-justification 1. “I have no money to start.”
As David Lavinsky says: “Entrepreneurial start is a science and art, how to do without money, without staff and without personal time”.
With money “big drunkenness” one should not start a “life feast”, from this one can “fall under the table”. The feast should start with a monetary aperitif, that is, a small amount, which is not difficult to get. And to eat and treat others at this feast, preferably should be nutritious food – your ideas and activities that improve the lives of others.
So first think about simple business ideas – without thinking about money. Then infect others with your faith in the ideas. Then you’ll get a start-up investment.
Self-justification 2. “I don’t have time; I’m in the flow of a long-established life.”
Everybody has extra time. The question is, you have to give up the extra time. If you were to fall asleep in the ground in your tent and have 24 hours of oxygen left, you wouldn’t be making jokes on Twitter, watching movies, news and football on TV. You’d be digging yourself out of the trap all the time.
Apply the same level of emergency. Give up what seems like a vacation, but what is not – and your schedule will instantly get an empty clock every day. All you have to do is want to fill the clock with the start of your own business.
Self-justification 3. “Your business is complicated and scary.”
Every entrepreneur is afraid to do business. And you as a child were afraid to go to school, to get on a bicycle, to swim in a pond, to fly in an airplane, to experience for the first time a difficult attraction, to make the first actions with a computer and a new gadget, to visit high mountains, to give a sign of attention to the loved one, to answer a sign of attention of the loving person.
And all this you did. Overcome the fear. And if you had not overcome – you would have been left without school, computer, flights, rest and loved people.
Make your fears into a fuel to stimulate willpower. Remember that the more terrified you were, the more fun you’ll get when you beat it. And the pleasure of your victory is an important engine of life (but here remember that self-complacency is the enemy of development).
Self-justification 4. “I don’t know anybody, I don’t have the right connections.”
It’s a funny excuse these days. With the help of company websites, as well as Facebook, Twitter and other social networks, you can establish contact with virtually any important for business person and entity.
Now all people and companies are amazingly accessible. This is one of the secrets of success for many of them. If they don’t answer you and do nothing for you, it means that they don’t know about your ideas yet. Ask yourself why?
Start by building a foundation that will convince an influential man. Remember that influential people are besieged by requests, because many others do not have this fear of your lack of connections. But most of them don’t have a convincing business idea that you have.
Thousands of millionaires said that at the start of the scheme risked to offer their scheme to important people – and were surprised that they were answered.
Self-justification 5. “I had ideas, but it’s too late: they’re implemented by others.”
Remember that Mark Zuckerberg was not the inventor of social networks. But he was the one who made them a world phenomenon. And he made the most money on the social network, too.
China was the first to come up with the idea of becoming a large-scale “world factory” for Western corporations. But now both Malaysia and India are making billions in the same way and solving a lot of social problems.
Finally, did you notice that at the beginning of the XXI century spiral energy-saving bulbs conquered the whole world – but immediately they began to be replaced by even more energy-saving LED bulbs?
The list of such examples can be continued. Innovations very rarely peak at the pioneer corporation. And almost most of the most successful companies have become great through the improvement of recently created ideas and innovations.
It is never too late to be ready to grind what a pioneer innovator has brought next to you – making his ideas better, faster, stronger or cheaper.
Self-justification 6. “I don’t speak well, I’m not convincing, I’m afraid to communicate.”
People will listen to anything they are interested in, no matter how or by whom it is said. There are plenty of teachers with speech problems, with painful ticks and syndromes (and also with appearance problems). But they are listened to (and looked at) because they say unique things that listeners feel useful to them.
If you are not being listened to, the problem is not the listener or the speaker – the problem is your content. More precisely, in the principles of its formation by you – you need to understand listeners and only based on their needs, to form their messages.
And one more thing: when starting a business, it’s not who you are that’s important, but what you want to achieve. If the outcome of your plan is fascinating – you will definitely be listened to.
Self-justification 7. “I have no business skills.”
No problem: Get skills. Take a course. Read the book. Read ten books. Talk to your friends.
Get a few hours a day in a small company like the one you want to create, take a closer look. Find someone who’s done almost what you want, and offer him some free help in exchange for his mentoring.
Self-justification 8. “I’m having trouble inventing a promising fresh idea.”
Most successful start-ups are not built on “making a whole new thing”, but on “making a better thing”. And to do that, you have to react to what already exists around you, immediately inventing how to improve it.
It’s very simple. Go out of the house, from your work – and berate (for yourself) about the tons of problems that need to be solved on your street. Many of the objects of your muttering are ready-made business ideas. Write them down.
Go through all the processes of your employment in your mind and start to complain about their shortcomings. You will quickly find a business idea that will find demand in many companies similar to the one you work in. Finally, just walk around your home, take a close look at your car, bike, baby toys… in general, you already understand.
Introduce a habit in your mind: “I observe a flaw – immediately thinking about how to improve it – immediately thinking about how this improvement would look like in the form of business – I immediately write everything down. And rest assured that you will have at least a hundred entries with business ideas in the first month of this practice.
Self-justification 9. “I don’t like to take any chances.”
Do you love to regret the lost opportunities? Youth and maturity is short, old age can make up a huge part of life – and it is good that these decades of old age you are not filled with resentment for everything around: because of the underrealization of your young and mature life. And everyone has that risk. And this is exactly the risk that you should not love and which you should avoid – in particular, by taking a risk in your youth when you start your own business.
Self-justification 10. “I can’t start a business because I’m doing everything perfect or nothing.”
It’s perfectionism, a syndrome sometimes associated with laziness, sometimes with fear. That’s what we said above.
The best is the enemy of the good. Doing clearly a good thing, but not the best, not the perfect thing, you’re already safe. And don’t be afraid of injections of conscience for “not perfect”: they’re stupid.
Self-justification 11. “I’ll be uncomfortable starting a different life.”
If a business idea violates your principles, your faith, your ethics – you should definitely not embody it.
But if you’re just lazy to get out of your comfort zone, remember that you will soon get bored with it. Why do you go on vacation, as not to change your comfort zone?
In addition, one day you will certainly, alas, get sick, you will be caught, alas, worried about the deaths of older loved ones – and then out of comfort zone you will at least for a while anyway. Either you will have children, grandchildren, or they will also get sick, or they will invent something in the world and you will want to remake something for this invention, or cataclysms will happen, or you will move to another place, or you will be struck by something recognized or someone you will meet. And all this will change your current comfort zone many times; there is no other life. So why take such care and cherish your comfort zone now?
Don’t worry, there are millions of psychological comfort zones. And in doing your business, you too will form a few such comfortable conditions for yourself.
Self-justification 12. “I can’t find someone who needs my idea.”
Promising business ideas can be described in a few words that everyone can understand. If no one understands your idea, step on your pride and remove this unlucky idea from the agenda. And immediately invent new, following ideas.
A person can not have in life a single business idea or one direction of ideas. They swarm in dozens.
Self-justification 13. “Business is too complicated.”
It’s hard to run a marathon distance right away. To run around the stadium today is a circle, tomorrow two and so on up to a distance of 42 kilometers is much easier.
It’s hard to lose ten kilograms at once. It is much easier to eat a little less for every meal day, month after month, year after year.
Take one small step towards a challenging goal – for example, invent and write down a dozen business ideas. Get some rest. Then take the second small step – learn how to write a business plan. And then there’s more. And then there’s more. And you will not notice how you already put your idea on crowdsourcing or begin to conduct substantive negotiations on the business plan with investors.
Self-justification 14. “Anxious is the shame that will befall me if the business fails.”
Let the following thought calm you down: business did not work out for millions of people around. Steve Jobs hasn’t done it for a long time, as everyone knows. You’ll have nothing to be ashamed of in front of such people: they won’t laugh at you or chide you. They know what the first failure is.
People who’ve done business immediately and always have, too, will respect you “for the shot”. They will recognize your soul mate, they will empathize, they will recognize you as a “member of the club”. They know what the first trial is.
In front of the rest, exclusively hired workers, also let there be no shame – you “fought”, you’re already a “veteran”, and they “sit in the rear”. They have no right to mock your failure, because it belongs to an area that they did not go to. Don’t worry if they reproach you in general or in detail – by criticizing you, they are already wrong because of their incompetent status as “non-businessmen”.
Self-justification without a number. The main question is, “Why do you do your business?”
The main answer: your business needs to become a person who lives his life according to his conditions and at the same time gives with the help of realized business ideas to people and the world that makes life better.
