How to choose men’s socks based on composition, color, shoes?

Despite the fact that socks have existed for most of the two millennia (the oldest pair was found around 350 AD) and remain everyday wardrobe items, we tend to bet that they are not a piece of clothing that you think a lot about.

But if you care about your looks, as well as everything in your wardrobe (or in your underwear drawer), this main knitted item deserves some attention, whether you choose a pair of Nike socks or elegant cotton socks from Falke or Pantherella. Believe it or not, there are some important rules on how to choose men’s socks and what to wear them with.

Socks under sandals

Portn purists will say no to these socks, but designers from Paris and Milan seem to be trying to convince us of something else – the recent shows SS18 AMI and Prada are a great example. As a rule, it never looks good to wear socks with sandals. But this option may look good with smooth leather slides, depending on your personal style. It’s up to you to decide how far you want to go with this option, but overall, we think it’s best to try it with a thick pair in a scar.

Socks under shorts

Generally, with shorts, it’s best to wear socks that aren’t visible unless your image is of a 1930s scout boy. However, if you’re going to follow the roller skate inspired image, we would recommend a pair of medium length socks or crew socks such as those made by Neighborhood and Vetements.

Loafer socks

During the summer months, loafers should be worn with socks that are not visible to make it look as if without socks – a much more hygienic alternative when the temperature outside starts to rise. In winter, however, a thin, patterned pair of socks – not too shouting, soft – can add a little insulation as well as a little fun.

Socks under your shoes

Given that your shoes are tougher than regular shoes and can rub your ankle, you should choose stronger socks here. Look for medium length socks made of wool, such as those offered by the British brand The Workers Clichy Mr.Gray.

Sock color

The great emperor of tailoring Edwin Hardy Amis had an opinion on all matters of clothing, and socks were no exception. “It is allowed to wear socks of a completely different color from the rest of the costume if the rest of the costume is one shade of a series of colors,” he said. “I find the match between the socks and the tie unnatural.”

In other words, you can compare the color of your socks to your outfit, but make sure it’s still harmonious without looking like you’ve tried too hard. For example, if you wear a two-piece brown suit with a blue shirt and tie, a pair of burgundy socks will provide a closer focus. If in doubt, choose a classic muted shade like dark blue or dark gray.

Patterned socks

Patterned socks are usually more casual in nature, and you should make sure that the drawing complements other components of your image. Try to compare one color in the pattern with other elements of your ensemble so that they fit together and combine. If in doubt, there is no shame in sticking to simple socks.

White socks

After some time spent in the wilderness, white socks crawl back into the men’s wardrobe in different ways. You should probably avoid them with official clothes, but feel free to wear white socks and slides or combine them as a 1990’s SoCal skater. On the slightly older side you can also choose white for a tidy look like Paul Newman did.

Sports socks

The style of short socks with a cuff sitting on the ankle. Also known as sneaker or workout socks. As the name suggests, they were originally reserved for sports activities. They are sometimes called ankle socks.

The socks are invisible

Also known as invisible socks. They are worn in a way that stretches from finger to heel. They are usually hidden from view when worn with shoes and have the appearance of a normal sock (no hygiene problems).

Socks to the middle of the shin

A sock of standard length, which dominates today. They sit above the ankle and are sometimes called crew socks.

The socks are above the shin

Socks that extend far beyond the ankle cover most of the lower leg and sit below the knee. The purpose of this length is to provide general coverage, and they have a special advantage among Italians, who claim that you can say something to an Englishman when he sits down, because he will show some of his leg because of his shorter socks, which traditionalists have always regarded as a tailor’s mistake.

Scarred socks

Very popular sock knitting, the scar adds texture and strength and is especially suitable for cooler weather. Scarring also makes the sock hug the leg, which helps it not to fall.

Socks for special occasions

Socks worn with formal clothing, either a suit, tuxedo or white tie. They’re traditionally always dark and above the shin. It is worth noting that the most luxurious socks for official clothing are made of silk.
