How to choose reading glasses?

Reading books and newspapers often causes problems for older people because of “old-fashioned farsightedness”, also called presbyopia. At the age of a crystalline lens, the eyes lose elasticity and refractive power, so it becomes difficult for them to focus their eyes on close objects, it is difficult to read books and use gadgets. In this case, an ophthalmologist chooses special glasses for reading.

From year to year, presbyopia is gaining momentum. Therefore, the patient has to change his glasses regularly. According to medical norms, at the age of 40 years should wear lenses with the power of +1 dioptre, and every 5 years to increase this figure. By the age of 65, glasses with +3.5 dioptre lenses are required. After this age, the lens elasticity disappears, so presbyopia ceases to develop.

What are the reading glasses?

Lenses for glasses come in different types: single-focal, bifocal and progressive. Single-focal lenses – with the same optical power over the whole surface are suitable only for correction of one disease: myopia or hyperopia.

Bifocal lenses help to see at different distances, both near and far.

But such lenses are less and less used in the age of digital devices, as it is much more convenient to use office or progressive lenses with several optical zones and without sharp separation of two optical zones. These lenses have a smooth progression corridor – the transition from one refraction to another and look like single focal lenses. At the same time, they allow you to see equally well at different distances.

What else should I look at?

    Dioptres. They must match your level of vision. Only an ophthalmologist or optometrist can help with this.

    Covering with lenses. There are lenses with brightening coatings, water and fat-repellent, hardening. Choose a coating that will make your reading even more comfortable. Always better is the multifunctional coating, which will prolong the life of the lens and give extra comfort to your eyes.

    Frame. Must be light and durable. Make sure it is comfortable and does not press anywhere.

A lot of people think they can use the reading glasses on their computers. However, ophthalmologists recommend buying special glasses for work at close and medium distances – office. It is desirable to apply a special coating to the lenses for such glasses, which protects the eyesight from glare and harmful blue light. They will prevent eye strain and prevent visual fatigue.

Ready or customized?

Ready-made reading glasses are inexpensive, but they have many disadvantages. For example, the same optical force over the entire surface, the average interfacing distance – most often 62-64. However, most people’s right and left eyes often require different correction, so the lenses should have different dioptres.

If the choice falls on progressive or office lenses, it is better to choose personalised lenses. Such lenses are made individually for the patient, considering all the nuances of the prescription:

    anisometropia;

    astigmatism;

    degree of myopia or hyperopia;

    monocular intertransparent distance (often asymmetrical);

    the fit and design of the frame;

    priority in the use of glasses (range, computer, reading).

Custom-made lenses designed specifically for your parameters will meet all criteria and make your vision clear and use of glasses as comfortable as possible. In this case, you can order, for example, lenses for glasses Nikon.

In the Nikon range there are also special glasses lenses for close and medium distances – Soltes Wide Neo, which can be purchased as a second glasses to progressive lenses.
