New hard drives will be made of glass

Hoya, which operates in the optical systems market, said it would require the use of glass plates to produce hard drives larger than 20 TB. Western Digital Corporation is now producing a 20TB HDD, and similar Seagate hard drives will be available soon. Hoya analysts believe that two conditions will have to be met for the release of 22 and 24 TB HDDs. It is necessary to increase the number of plates to at least ten, as well as increase the recording density.

The latter is possible due to HAMR technology with heating. This technology, by the way, is used in Seagate. Hoya is already developing glass plate production. Glass will allow you to install more plates in the hard drive. In addition, the glass can withstand heat up to 700 degrees Celsius.
