Quarterly sales of hard drives fell by 33%

According to the Storage Newsletter, the demand for hard drives is sharply decreasing – according to the results of the II quarter. the volume of their shipments decreased by 33% in annual terms.

In total, 46.5 million HDDs were delivered in the corporate and consumer segments in the last quarter, in 2010 the figure was 163 million – almost a 4-fold drop.

In the corporate segment, demand in annual terms decreased slightly, but it is a market that has been growing steadily for more than a year and will continue to grow: cloud infrastructure and the segment of high-performance computing require a lot of drives for data storage.

The most active fall in the sector of hard drives of the 2.5-inch form factor – by 40% to 11 million HDDs. Solid state drives are increasingly being used in laptops.

Shipments of 3.5-inch hard drives fell more than 30% quarter-over-quarter to 17 million units. The most active decrease in demand was recorded in the segments of video surveillance systems.
