We buy in quarantine. How many and what products do you need for a month

After the quarantine was declared, the Ukrainians panicked and rushed to the shops to buy the basic necessities. The President stressed that there was no need for it, as buckwheat, matches and toilet paper do not save from coronavirus.

For a while the excitement went down, but after the quarantine was extended, the demand resumed. Analysts say that bread, cereals, dairy products and vegetables from borscht set may become “golden” before April 24. Economists are avoiding specific forecasts, as we are talking about speculation.

For now, one should not panic, because the shortage of goods is not expected. Most suppliers report that warehouses have goods for at least 5-6 days, some – even 20-day stocks. On the other hand, a rational purchase of goods will help to be less in public places. Especially since most supermarkets do not allow visitors without masks, and this product today – at the price of gold.

If you are determined to buy products until the end of quarantine, it is worth doing it wisely, so that spoiled products then were not in the garbage. So what to buy first and in what quantity?

Of course, each person’s monthly meal is strictly individual. In Ukraine there is a consumer basket with general indicators of consumption of basic products. Based on it and calculate the minimum subsistence level for the population. But this basket is unrealistic. For example, it says that a person eats only 166 grams of buckwheat per month.

Much more interesting are the purchase instructions that are given in other countries. At the Federal Office for Civil Protection and Disaster Relief of Germany, for example, for 10 days quarantine was ordered to buy 20 liters of bottled water. Accordingly, 60 litres of bottled water will be needed for a month. However, you should not buy water during quarantine if this is not your practice. Nothing will happen to the centralized water supply, which means that you can sleep in peace.

Cereals. Buckwheat from the beginning of quarantine has already risen in price to 45 USD. But experts say that it is not the price increase, but the lack of cheap equivalents on the shelves, which were bought by the Ukrainians. But not a single buckwheat. It’s time to buy rice or millet, depending on what you like. In the U.S. it is advised to limit not only these groats, but also cereals or regular oatmeal.

If you like pasta very much, it’s a good time to buy it. If spaghetti from a cheap segment to quarantine averaged 16.5 USD, now the price is close to 22 per pack. And by the end of quarantine the goods can become scarce at all.

The main thing is not to exceed the limits. The Germans advise to buy 10.5 kg of cereal for a month. But this figure – including potatoes and bread. You can buy 5 kg of potatoes and 5 kg of cereal if you wish.

Have you become hotter and bought more croups than you need, and they are full of insects? Put the bag in the freezer for a few days. Put the cereal in a bowl, let it warm up to room temperature and pack it in a glass jar. Wash the cereal before cooking.

If there is no more room in the freezer, you can put a small cloth bag of coarse rock salt, dry lemon peels and even a piece of foil in the can or bag of cereal.

Flour and bakery products. If you don’t bake something at home often, 1.5 kg should suffice. Use airtight cans. Also try to keep the flour away from coffee and spices.

For the first time in a long period of time, bread has stopped in price and in theory will only become more expensive. But it is not worth buying it, as the product can be stored in the fridge for a week maximum. Pay attention to it only if you have a place in the freezer. After the freezer, warm it up in the oven and it will be as fresh as possible. Whole grains or seed crackers can also be a good alternative to the product.

Fruit. The Germans offer to buy as much as 12 kg of dried fruit. Curaga will prevent the cardiovascular system, prunes accelerate metabolism, figs are a good antioxidant, and raisins help recover from disease. Do not forget about the nuts.

However, it is not necessary to make such large stocks. Many varieties of apples “live” a month, if stored correctly. You’ll need about 3 kg per month.

Both dried fruits and Ukrainian apples are not a bad alternative to imported goods, which will continue to rise in price. Of course, if you cannot imagine your life without oranges and bananas, kiwi, buy them while they are still available. Medics advise to buy lemons for the quarantine period – about 4 of them. But we should hurry up – in some networks prices have already exceeded 94 USD per kilo.

Given this rapid growth, it can be concluded that the products that help increase immunity are more expensive. Some Ukrainians believe that lemons can help defeat the coronavirus, although doctors deny it.

Probably, berries will be cheaper, so it makes no sense to buy them frozen. If the quarantine continues, they could get cheaper. Since the markets are closed and only 3% of the product goes to supermarkets, the stores are likely to be flooded with berries at a reduced price.

Vegetables. Broccoli and salad leaves, cucumbers and tomatoes are perishable products. It’s better to spend money on borscht products. You will need about 5 kg of cabbage, 2 kg of carrots and 1 kg of onions.

The last one, by the way, is rapidly becoming more expensive. In some networks it is sold at a speculative price of 60 USD/kg. There may be several reasons for this. The first is the reduction of onions in our vegetable stores. It was exported to the Middle East, as well as to Romania and Moldova. The second is the growing demand for the virus, as well as for garlic.

One retail chain is warning that all borscht products can double in price. Carrots, for example, have risen in price to 42 USD/kg.

As an option, to save money and not to worry about the safety of products, you can buy frozen broccoli, cauliflower, asparagus. The Germans advise to tarry with canned vegetables: corn, peas, tomatoes. According to their estimates, you will need 7.5 kg. Pay attention to the condition of the package: do not buy crushed and even more bloated tin cans. It is highly probable that they already have a fermentation process.

Don’t forget the tomato sauce as well.

Meat and eggs. It’s worth buying fresh meat and fish, splitting them into portions and freezing them. Please note: fish can rise in price, as it is often an imported product. Meat will cost less than vegetables and cereals.

The United States also advises citizens to buy canned tuna. Tinned meat and fish, if eaten for a month, can be stored outside the refrigerator. Canned stew can be stored in cold for six years.

As for eggs, they are stored just until the month. You will most likely need two packs. Store the eggs with a point down.

In total, according to the Germans, 3.5 kg of meat, fish and eggs are enough for a month. But start with your usual diet.

Dairy products. For the first 10 days, the Germans advise to grill 2.5 kg of milk and dairy products. But it is better not to buy the food for sale, as their shelf life can not be extended almost in any way. Except that on the first days of quarantine – milk in a package with a long shelf life. Cakes can be used on cheese cakes. Hard cheese is also suitable for quarantine in the first few days. You can buy about 0.5 kg and pack it in a plastic film with a slice of black bread.

Analysts advise to buy these goods either at the beginning of quarantine or when stocks are running out. Optionally, you can replace some products with condensed or powdered milk.

Other goods. Choose what you like: chocolate, powdered cookies. Honey is also a good choice, as it can stand indoors for several years. Americans advise their citizens to buy chips, too.

As for tea and coffee, increase stocks if you are used to buying them for take-away. Especially if retailing coffee and other drinks in your city is prohibited. You’ll need about a pack of both. Don’t forget about sugar and salt. The Germans also recommend buying 1.2 litres of vegetable oil.

Buy your pet food and basic medicines. If you have a dog, think about diapers if you can’t walk him.

Hygiene and medication. Dentists recommend that you change your toothbrush once a month. Get a tube of toothpaste, shampoo, air conditioning, shaving cream, powder and soap. Please note that essential oils, which previously cost 25-60 USD, have gone up in price several times. Now it is better to buy, for example, bath salts.

And, of course, toilet paper. It’s strictly individual. You should not abuse the purchase of such hygiene products and litter the room. Especially since this product should not be expensive. Some users of social networks already say that the purchased paper is used for homemade masks.

In the clothing allowance of the military also has a standard: 50 m per month per person. The length of a roll of toilet paper is 65 m. But the Ukrainians say that on average, about 6 rolls of toilet paper per month per family of 3 people. That is, there are 2 rolls of toilet paper for one person.

The Red Cross also advises to buy basic medicines for a month. These are painkillers, sorbents, medicines for coughing and colds, and pills to relieve sore throats. Think about buying vitamins – this is important during quarantine.

The Germans also offer candles, a flashlight, a gas burner and batteries. But such goods are hardly necessary in this situation.

If you have fresh food at home, use it first to minimize losses. And before buying, make sure you already have some, so you don’t spend too much.

We wish you to approach the quarantine wisely and not to give in to panic. Be full and do not gain extra pounds.
